I am the lion, I am the mountain,
I am the walker across the plain,
I am the land that I sustain,
I am the journeyer who shall remain.

The sculpture was built over 5,5 days
We used 40 tonnes of sand.

We worked on the sunny beach of Scheveningen with our team on our sand sculpture ‘The cradle of life’. Paul and Remy were working on the Lion King, and Helena sculpted a gracious herd of impala’s, with help of our helpers-students.The second day we finished our proud lion on the rock; he looked so real and fitted in so well against the Victorian building of the famous Kuhrhaus in Scheveningen. That night Paul dreamed that the lion roared, he was disturbed. The next morning at breakfast the organization told us the bad news: sand hooligans had destroyed our work. They had chopped of all our sculptures heads! It looked like they had punched the lion in its face and his whole snout had dropped off! In the sand we found a big screwdriver which they used to hack into our other lions and the impala’s heads. They had brutally tried to take the soul of our sculptures, it was horrible!

We dug in our heels, and used the aggressive energy that the sand hooligans gave to us and spent the whole day, repairing the damage . Within a few hours we managed to give the lion a new face, we had to work with what was left. And we put in its face the emotions we were feeling: surprise that anyone would do such a thing, the power to show them that we would not be defeated. We worked hard over the last 2 days and our combined achievement won us 2nd place,Everyone was astounded by our recovery.
